We are Addicted So What?

Video games have been able to consumers for the past thirty years. Nowadays, with everything so advanced, the public has expressed their concerns, regarding video game addiction. “Addiction has been defined as a primary chronic disease, characterized by the inability to control the use of a substance or behavior. (Schlimme, Source card#3). All addictions can be dangerous to the addicted and others around him/her; however, video game addiction can be extremely harmful, especially towards children. Video game addiction is also tied to depression and anxiety in kids. Video game addiction is mainly caused by stress and inconfidence. The outcomes of children who have been victims of video game addiction are drastic drops in his or her grades, and bad social skills.

Video games are becoming increasingly popular, especially with reasonably young children. This could potentially increase the likelihood of these children developing addictions to video games. A recent study that was conducted in Singapore consisted of two thousand two hundred male students from six different primary schools. These students were ranging from ages of six to twelve. The results from this survey indicate that fifteen percent of the students tested, have played video games in the past, another twenty of the students that were surveyed claim to playing about twenty to twenty two hours of video games a week. (Andrea, Source card #2). A similar report and study that was conducted by, Dr. Richard Gallagher, director of the parenting institute at the University of New York, shows that thirty eight billion in America have gaming consoles, and in 2001 alone 9.1 billion dollars were spent on video games by consumers in the United States.

This question is commonly asked, “Well what causes video game addiction?” Some of the reasons as to why children develop addictions to video games are, the individual that is addicted to video games, is socially awkward, they live in a stressful environment, or suffer from bad grades. All this will eventually lead to this child wanting to gain confidence, eventually causing them to lose themselves in the video game, therefore causing addiction.

Today’s elaborate video games require the players to pay constant attention to the game, and to be a part of the game’s script, this has numerous negative effects on children. Those who are addicted are basically in a world of their own, they will eventually build a wall around themselves. This will cause the addicted child to have bad social and interaction skills with children their age, and since a majority of video games

nowadays offer chat rooms for players to interact with each other, the only people that this child is communicating with, are those who are in this “digital” world.  Eventually the child will start to neglect family, severe after effects of video game addiction, are disruptions in the addicted child’s sleep cycle, or their hand and body constantly shaking.

In conclusion, all addictions are harmful, to the addicted and those around him/her, but video game addiction in children is a serious matter. Scientists, Physiatrists, and Pediatricians are currently conducting tests and studies to rectify this issue. Not surprisingly, those who are addicted saw a significant drop in their grades. Results from tests and surveys indicate that once the addicted child stops gaming, their depression lifted. Those who are addicted spend more than twenty two hours a week glued to their computer monitor or TV screen, playing video games, so pediatricians recommend no more than two hours a day. Video game addiction is definitely linked with depression and anxiety in children.
